What’s paid-only: full HPI (finance, theft, write-off register access) — and why

A full HPI-style check — whether from HPI itself or another provider such as Experian AutoCheck or the AA/RAC equivalents — pulls from data sources DVLA and DVSA simply don’t hold: whether the car has outstanding finance owed against it, whether it’s recorded as stolen, and full access to the insurance industry’s write-off register (categories A, B, S and N) rather than the more limited write-off marker DVLA carries. That data comes from commercial and industry sources — finance houses, the police national computer, insurers via industry anti-fraud registers — and those providers charge for access because compiling and maintaining it costs money. There genuinely is no free equivalent, because the underlying data isn’t public in the first place.

Why online “free check” claims often quietly mean something narrower

A lot of sites advertising a “free car check” are, on close reading, offering exactly the free DVLA/DVSA data above — repackaged with different branding — while the finance, theft and full write-off data sits behind a paywall or an upsell once you’ve entered a registration. That’s not necessarily dishonest, but it’s easy to come away thinking you’ve had a full history check when you’ve actually had the free tier of one.
